Reading in Year 4
Children who read regularly achieve better in primary school. In high school they gain better exam results. Reading improves concentration, language skills and boosts creativity and imagination. In Year 4 we place the utmost importance in the promotion of reading.
Every day in Year 4 we read to the children. As well as being read to daily, the children have Guided Reading lessons every morning. These may include reading in a small group to improve fluency and comprehension, as well as phonics-based lessons to ensure that each child can decode words accurately.
Support at home: each child has their own reading record. The expectation is that children read at home every day, and that a parent signs their reading record 5 times a week. We understand that everyone has busy home lives, however reading is the single most important way you can support your child's learning. If there is an evening where you are unable to read, please strongly encourage your child to read independently and sign their reading record to show that they have done this.
