Phonics and Reading in Year 2

Reading is taught as part of a daily 45 minute lessons following the RWI programme.  This programme is brilliant for building children's confidence and supports a child's writing and spelling skills as well.   We also listen to a story being read out loud every day for at least 15 minutes and visit our wonderful library each week.

Three types of books will be sent home per week:

1. Read Write Inc 'Book Bag Books'

2. A copy of the reading book taught in that week's phonics lessons and

3. A library book

Support at home: each child has their own reading record. Our aim as a school for children to read to an adult at home at least 4 times a week.  This could be sharing a bedtime story, reading a shopping list or their own magazine.  There are so many opportunities and we want children to develop a love of reading and recognise the value and wonder at being able to read.  Research indicates that a child who reads frequently at home will achieve higher GCSE grades than a child who does not read for pleasure.   Please ensure that your child brings in their reading record and books each day as we do not have a set day for changing books.  Any questions please just ask one of the team.
